Butterflies in Taita Hills

Species composition differ among ecosystems. Previous studies on butterfly species in Arabuko Sokoke forest showed that forest specialist butterflies mainly occur inside of pristine forest, while a mix of forest and open land species can be observed along forest edges and in plantations. In this study, three students, Joachim Bretzel and Johannes Gebler from Technical University Munich, together with a kenyan master student of Taita Taveta University studied butterfly species composition along transects in different habitat types, such as  pristine cloud forest, agricultural land, and plantation. After data collection in the field, they classified all species according its habitat preference (during the preimaginal and imaginal stage), species´ distribution range and other functional traits such as budy size, and wing shape.
